How to Connect RING to ALEXA (Echo Show, Fire TV Stick, Echo Speaker)

1. Launch the Alexa app
2. Click the menu button in the upper left
3. Select Skills and Games
4. Do a search for Ring
5. Click the Ring search result
6. Click the Enable to Use button
7. Now log into your Ring account to give Alexa access
8. Then give a final authorization
9. The link is successful, so close out this window
10. Now Alexa will access your Ring account and see if you have any cameras
11. Click, Setup Device and wait.
12. One camera found. Let’s set it up
13. Looks like the camera is ready to use – Done

Here on the devices page, there is a Cameras button.  When I click it, I can turn on notifications through Alexa, so she lets me know when someone rings the doorbell.

Let’s ask Alexa if the configuration was successful using the Echo Show.

“Alexa, show me the Front Door”

By default, you can listen in.  To enable 2-way communication, you will need to click on the mic button.

The sound quality is ok… and you get the normal 1 second lag as you would using the Ring app.

To end the session, click the arrow in the upper left corner or say, “Alexa, stop”.  “Alexa, hide front door” or “Alexa go home”, also works.

When the doorbell rings, I get an on screen and verbal notification, but I cannot activate the camera by touch.  I need to ask Alexa to show me the camera.  “Alexa show me the front door”

By default, you can listen in to what’s happening outside.  To talk back, press the mic button.

As you see, the image froze.  I ensured Ring, the fire stick and Alexa were up to date and every time I press the mic button, I get a screen freeze.  What’s worse, is I can not access the Ring doorbell again until I go into the Ring app, connect and then disconnect.

You end the session in the same way, by pressing on the Alexa button and saying, “Stop”

The Canadian versions of Alexa skills are always lagging the American, so we don’t yet have the notification feature for when someone rings the doorbell or when motion is detected.

Let’s now try the Echo speaker and let’s see how it works with Ring as it has no screen for displaying the camera.  Let’s start by asking to open the 2-way communication channel.

“Alexa, talk to the front door”

The connection is made and I am able to hear what is happening outside and they can hear me.

To end the 2-way communication, say “Alexa stop”.

When the doorbell rings, I get notification but will need to ask Alexa to open communication.

But what happens when I ask to see the front door?

“Alexa, show me the front door”

Let’s set that control link between the Echo and the Fire Stick.

1. In the Alexa app, click the menu button in the upper left
2. Click settings
3. Scroll down to TV and Video
4. Select Fire TV
5. “Control your Fire TV with your Alexa device” – Click Link Your Alexa
6. Yes, that’s my Fire TV – Continue
7. I’ll select these 2
8. Link Devices
9. Done – Return to FireTV

Now that the link between the Echo and the Fire Stick is created, let’s try that again, “Alexa, show me the front door”

Again, the mic connection here doesn’t work, but let’s open the communication through the echo speaker.

“Alexa, talk to the front door”

When you’re done, you’ll need to cancel those 2 commands.  “Alexa Stop.”  And now the video: “Alexa Stop.”
