Hey Guys, today we are doing the physical install of the Wi-Fi ring video doorbell Pro.

This is a follow-up presentation of my unboxing video.  Today, I’ll be venturing outdoors in the cold to install this HD video doorbell next to my front door.  This process involves 2 major steps:

  • The pro power kit install on my existing inside doorbell. This using the existing power supply to your current doorbell to power the new outside doorbell.

  • Replacing the old outside doorbell with the new one.

Since the placement of my old doorbell is on a 90-degree angle to my door, I will use this angled bracket to point the camera towards the approach area of my door, instead of towards my neighbor’s yard.  The bracket is a high quality zinc and not cheap plastic like some which are available out there.  Each wedge is 20 degrees and can be placed one on the other to reach 40 degrees.

Let’s get the power shut off on my breaker box to my old doorbell and get this power kit installed.

  1. Pop the cover off of your current doorbell.
  2. There are 3 screws inside which are securing 3 wires. One for the “front” door, one for “back” and one for “trans” to step down the power.  These wires go directly to your doorbell buttons and in my case, I have both a front and rear doorbell.
  3. Loosen the screw with the label “front”. My wire is over an inch exposed, so I’ll cut it down to half that length.  I don’t want any exposed wire showing once it’s inside of my connector.
  4. The connector is already attached to the wire labeled “front” from the kit. Once the wire is inserted, close the connector latch to complete the circuit.
  5. The other end of the wire from the kit labeled “front” now needs to be secured to your current doorbell where you just removed that wire.
  6. Repeat that process now with the wired labeled “trans”.

Now that the wiring on this end is done, you’ll need to tuck everything away so you can replace your cover.  Make sure nothing is touching the chines or the bells on your system here otherwise they will not ring properly.  Luckily there is double sided tape on the power kit so you can secure it someone inside your doorbell, or even outside if you needed to.

Let’s head outside in the cold and install the wedges and new doorbell.

  1. I’ve already gone ahead and removed the old doorbell. I am unable to use the plastic back-plate because the screw holes do not align with my wedges.
  2. Place the wedge labeled “A” in the location you want to install it and mark your drill holes with a smaller drill bit. I am doing this because I will be installing anchors in my masonry.  If you are installing this on wood or vinyl siding (with a wooden background), you do not need to use anchors.
  3. Using the provided masonry drill bit by ring, I will go ahead and drill those 2 holes.
  4. Now I’m going to insert those anchors provided in the kit.
  5. And it’s at this point I realize the screws included in the kit are too short because the grout on my natural stone in about one half an inch deep. So, time to make a run to the hardware store.
  6. I was thinking I should add some caulking here to ensure no moisture gets in this little gap where the wire protrude from the masonry.
  7. I picked up 1.5 inch screws that have a width of 6. They are the skinniest I could find of this length and should fit ok into the anchors.
  8. Since the wedge comes in 2 pieces, I’ll secure part A first, followed by B.
  9. With that installed, remove the cover from the ring doorbell and loosen the screws on the back.
  10. Connect each wire to these screws and it does not matter which one goes on which.
  11. Tuck the wires in behind and attached to doorbell to the bracket.
  12. Remove the protective film on the glossy and plastic areas.
  13. The hard part is done. Let’s go inside and turn on the electricity.
  14. The doorbell indicates you need to follow the instructions in the ring app to continue.
  15. Press the setup button on the side of the doorbell to set up the app.
    To avoid cramming too much information in this session, I will walk through the steps of setting up the app and showing you the footage for daytime and with nightvision is a separate presentation.
  16. Secure the doorbell cover with star screw and you are done.

Overall the physical install was pretty easy.  I did have to purchase longer screws to get the wedges installed, due to the deep grout between my rocks.  The two 20-degree angle adapters positioned my camera perfectly providing a good look at the door itself and the approach area to my home.  So far, I’m impressed with the quality of the product.  I wish it was wired to my network and powered over ethernet but once we get the app installed we’ll test for lag.  I’ll be setting up the app and playing with the motion detection feature in a future video, so please subscribe to see this when it’s released.
