Recording WYZE Camera Footage on your PC or NVR / DVR over RTSP

1. In order to use the streaming feature from the Wyze cam, we’ll need to update or flash the camera’s firmware. Wyze cam has 2 versions of the firmware; the regular one that is installed on the camera when you buy it and the RTSP version.  Maintaining both firmware versions is a lot of work, so they don’t release as many updates for the less popular RTSP version.  To do this firmware switch, we’ll need to download the latest version of the RTSP software.  I’ll add a link to this page in the description.  (download the zip file, open the downloads folder, open the zip file and copy the firmware, paste it in a new folder on my computer)  While I am at it, I’ll download the latest version of the non-RTSP firmware so I can revert back. (Go to that link, download the zip file, open the downloads folder, open the zip file, copy the bin and paste it in a special location)

2. To see which version of the Wyze app you are currently running, open the Wyze app, selecting the camera, click the gear icon in the upper right, and scroll down to Device Info. 9.5.36
3. Next, we need to get the RTSP bin file onto a micro sd card. I’m using a 32-gig card.
4. Copy the file over to the card and rename it demo.bin, so that camera will pick it up when we reboot it.
5. Drop the card into the camera.
6. Hold down the Setup button and plug in the camera.
7. Give it a few seconds and once the status light is blue, release the button.
8. Give the camera a couple of minutes to install the software and restart.
9. Once the new firmware is installed go back to the settings page, then advanced setting. You should not see an option for RTSP.
10. Turn on this setting and give the camera a new username and password. This is not your credentials to your Wyze account.
11. Click generate to get your connection string.
12. Remember the IP address here.

1. Right click and select Add.
2. Give it a name.
3. Leave Network IP.
4. Enable Audio, disable motion since I’ll be continuously recording, and select Direct to disk so we are not encoding and taking up PC processing power.
5. Ok, enter the IP address. 168.0.190
6. Enter the credentials.
7. Update the Brand to Wyze and model is V2.
8. Make sure the RTSP port is 554.
9. Change the path to “live”.
10. On the record tab, select continuous.
11. Looks like I have double overlays, but I can fix that later.

Quick lag test.  Not bad.

Here is a quick sound quality test.  Here is the sound from the app.  And the sound through BI.  Hardly any difference.

Using this Hikvision NVR, let’s add the camera to a channel.  The NVR is connected to my home network and has an IP address on the same subnet as the camera.

1. Navigate to the Camera management page
2. Select an empty channel and if we go into edit the connection details for this channel… under Protocol, there is no RTSP or Wyze option. To fix this, we’ll need to add it.
3. Under More Settings, go to Protocol and select a custom protocol. I’ll call mine, Wyze, then update the path with /live.
4. Now back on the channel connection details page, we’ll use the IP address of the camera.
5. Select Wyze from the Protocol
6. Enter the credentials.
7. Click ok, and we’re done.
8. Let’s do a quick lag test. Not too bad at all.

The NVR does not pick up the audio and when I try to see if it’s included in the main video stream, I get a message saying the function isn’t supported.  Hopefully this is something that can be fixed in a future NVR firmware update.
